I think this likely to end up as essential after the election which seems likely now to be a Tory landslide.Let's make it so we keep the right out of power for generations and not just 12 years. That will mean a realignment of left/Greens to carry forward policies with a commitment to changing the voting system and updating our system of government.

Well, any talk of a "British Obama" is nonsense and just puts undue pressure on the lad. He is a kid after all, and for all Pitt the younger's brilliance not everyone is such an early developer. One only needs to look at Blair's "Bambi" performances in his youth compared to his untouchable statesmanlike presence later on to see how someone can develop.

The thing that gets me about Chuka though is that he doesn't leave his comfort zone. He says things that are 'safe', Compass oriented and palatable liberal. He doesn't break out of the comfort zone and say anything that hasn't been chewed over in the media for months.

Speak your mind Chuka - you are going to be an MP within a year without doubt - so be radical, be innovative and let yourself loose.

Regarding his oratory abilities - he was a solicitor, not a barrister, so hasn't really had the opportunity to develop a stage like performance. It will come in time I think as he strikes me as a bright bloke.

New Labour is about voting for a Thatcherite government with a leader who has ideals of a Thatcherite government, being disabled I've been watching and campaigning, but when I wrote to my MP she refused to get involved saying she was new labour, when I wrote to Tony Blair the DWP investigated me to ensure I was disabled, and when I wrote to Brown his office said it would be better looking for work then writing to him. good solid Labour principles.

New research has found that many of the UK’s young leaders are being overlooked. A survey of 1,200 people by international leadership development organisation Common Purpose has found that less that half of people receive leadership development before the age of 25. This is despite the fact that over half of respondents said they had wanted leadership development at a younger age.

To address this problem, Common Purpose is expanding Frontrunner, its leadership development programme for the UK’s young adults. The Frontrunner programme uses real-life situations as its classroom. Participants are taken to a diverse range of organisations where they explore the problems they are facing, alongside the people who are tackling them. This is a rare chance to explore what is required to lead effectively with people already leading change in society. Participants also gain a stimulating new peer network of other leaders across the UK.

There are over 100 free places on the programme and the application process is now open to people over the age of 18, who may be in full-time education or are in the very early stages of their career, and who have already shown evidence of leadership.

Frontrunner is a residential course that will be held four times in 2009:
• 22-25 June 2009 in London
• 13-16 July 2009 in Leeds
• 2-5 September 2009 in Bristol
• 7-10 September 2009 in Belfast

The deadline for the Leeds and London Frontrunner programmes is 27 April 2009. The deadline for the Bristol and Belfast programme is 27 July 2009. What's wrong with materialism? It's simply the (accurate) statement that there is nothing beyond that which we encounter with our senses that can be relied upon.

It is the basis of almost all public policy in every nation which isn't a theocracy or dominated by a bunch of squalling moralists. If you meant "consumerism" then that is what you should have said.

I think this a brilliant piece on the whole. I almost share Matty Roches frustration at young people at times but I am hugely proud of most the young people i know and the people that I have contact with in political and activist circles.

I have met lots of activists, lots of volunteers, lots of young people that have not jumped on the corporate selfish, indidivualist bandwagon. Young people that have chosen to be teachers, people that have chosen to travel to broaden their horizons. Yet for every young person that has taken a corporate job (which I suppose Matty would consider as making very little positive impact on society) I cast no judgement on them because the welfare rug is being pulled from under their feet. Young people want a steady job, a house and a work life balance.

The fact that these jobs are not being provided by neo-liberalism is not young people's fault. Were not responsible for inequality, were not responsible for stagnating wages and unemployment or the Iraq war.

Matty's post seems to be in many ways a conservative piece, like an old drunk man ranting in the corner how were all spoilt and have no respect for our elders. Do you really blame people for pursuing escapism when were facing the biggest economic downturn since world war two and climate catastrophe?

You really think young people have it so good? Well I would like to see Matty come and talk to some of my unemployed friends and tell them how lucky they are.

The living wage campaign in london has not only not created a race to the bottom, it has in fact persuaded "the muscle of capital" like KPMG or Citigroup to implement the living wage in their own organisations. Before rushing into support for regionalisation of the minimum wage, we need to think through the possible, even probable, unintended consequences, e.g.:

a) a race to the bottom as bigger firms choose location on basis of how far they can push down a regional minimmum wage through consultation with weakish (local) governments (i.e.via CBI or simply via the muscle of capital, and often as threat rather than actual but no less effective for that.

b) the further undermining of the power of collective bargaining which - while I agreed with the national minimum wage as a pragmatic tool for redistriution in the late 1990s - does much to emasculate trade unions and would do more if it was regionalised (effectively part of the race to the botoom issue via a different route)

c) the risks that come with further sectorization of the national economy not just in terms of creating/reinforcing poor wage areas but in terms of the greater transportation INTEGRATION that this would preversely bring. The UK is already a very nationally integrated economy and this shows on the roads (why are French motorways so clear except on 'le grand depart'? Because of more regionalised economies in a bigger country.) While San Fran might similarly be a relatively self-contained economy (I wouldn't know) this is far from the case in the UK and regionalistion will only cause more flows rather than what we should be seeking in tyhe shorter term - increases in regional self-containment of the economy.

I have no problems, by the way, with the London Citizens-fronted push for the London living wage,which is admirable collective action-of-a-sort, but a legislated (at whatever government level) minimum wage is different.

While I think you do well to raise an interesting debate again, I think you misrepresent both Mil at 21st CenturyFix, who only asks the question, and particularly Dave Semple at Though Cowards Flinch (not Liberal Conspiracy,I'm sure that's just a typo) who is clearly not in favour of what you think is a good idea.
